School Bread, I have been reading and seeing a lot about this little bugger for the past year. More and more people are talking, reviewing posting videos and lists with it. Well it is about time I jump into the fray.
Kringla Bakeri og Cafe has been a regular stop for me for the past 20 years, something about Norway that always drew me in…Malestrom will Rise Again…I myself am a huge fan of the Lefse, but that is a review for another day. The Kringla Bakeri Og Kafe menu describes it as a Sweet Cardamom Bun filled with Vanilla Crème Custard and topped with Glazed and Toasted Coconut. The Wikipedia definition of School Bread is Skolebolle (English: School Bun) is the Norwegian name for a type of sweet roll that consists of regular dough of yeast, custard and icing with grated coconut. It was usually put in school lunches as a dessert or sold at bake sales, hence the name.
School Bread @ Kringla Bakeri Og Cafe
At first glance it appears similar to a Jelly or Cream filled Donut, but on closer inspection, I noticed the cake or breading, it was similar to a soft roll with a slightly dry soft crust, I became hesitant to my choice. I cut off a piece, making sure I had a good sample of bread, cream and coconut, I was surprised by what I tasted, unlike many of the Disney Cakes and Treats, it was not incredibly sweet, it was actually more on the creamy mild sweet side. The cake was very similar to that of a roll, thus why they call is School Bread and not School Cake, the cardamon bread taste like cinnamon, and if you didn’t know it was cardamon you would have thought it was a light cinnamon bread, like having a dinner roll with cinnamon butter. I found the custard cream, light and sweet, like the cake not heavy or overly sweet.
What I did notice about the School Bread was, after finishing it I was not having that heavy bloated, dragging feeling. I was able to eat the whole serving, which despite my love of treats I find doesn’t happen often with treats in the park. It is moderately priced at $3.49, I complemented it with a Voss Artesian Water, (the only water I drink in the parks after Dasani or as I call it Disney Water). If you haven’t had one yet I recommend you at least try one, you will be pleasantly surprised
